Fire Safety
The Queensland Fire Service has instructed Nambour Community Centre that for it to comply with Fire Safety regulations, each group using the Centre needs to be responsible for ensuring the safety of its own members in the event of a fire. Therefore, the designated “leader” of each group will be known as the designated “Fire Safety Officer” for that particular time period and group. Each group leader needs to know how many members they have in attendance at each group meeting (a roll book could be kept for larger numbers).
Instructions for “Fire Safety Officer” in the event of a fire / fire drill:
1. Give a general warning immediately a fire is discovered. Use the whistle located in the
kitchen (found next to the fire extinguishers).
2. Contain the fire if safe to do so by using suitable extinguishers / fire blanket (found in kitchen
behind door).
3. If the fire cannot be contained, phone the fire department on 000 using a mobile phone.
4. Commence evacuation – all persons are to move smartly but not run. It is the group leader’s
responsibility to establish a procedure to ensure that sufficient non disabled individuals are
available to expedite the evacuation of all disabled people under their care. It is the group
leader’s responsibility to ensure that the group under their control moves in an orderly
manner to the assembly point (eastern side of building, in car park, under the big tree).
Remember to check toilets and smoking areas for people who are not in your meeting
room at the time of the emergency.
5. Once at the assembly point, the group leader shall call a role to ascertain that all persons
are accounted for. The group leader should remain in control of the group until the
emergency is over or until relieved by the Fire Department officers.
6. Names of people who are not accounted for should be immediately communicated to an
officer in charge at the assembly point, who will, to the best of his / her ability, try to locate
these people. Should this be unsuccessful, names and last known location of missing
people should be communicated to an officer in charge. Do not re-enter any building.
7. Keep all roadways clear of vehicle traffic. Do not gather on footpaths in such a way as to
block access to the site.
8. If time permits, before evacuation, close all windows, shut down gas lines (near staff car
park), air-conditioning systems etc.
9. Do not take refuge in toilets, store rooms or other areas.
Each group leader should be instructed on how to operate a fire extinguisher and use a fire blanket. Please contact Nambour Community Centre for an appointment time for this demonstration. For groups who change their leadership on a regular basis, please ensure that the new group leader is also given these instructions.
